Zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking any result. They read the answer on the results page, in an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a map pack or a knowledge panel, and move on. SparkToro’s clickstream research puts the US share at about 68 percent of Google searches in the first four months of 2026.
What to do about it is simpler than the headlines suggest. Stop treating a click to your own site as the only outcome that counts. Make sure your brand appears inside the answer, on your own pages and on the third-party pages that Google and AI engines quote. Then focus click-chasing on the commercial and branded queries where people still need to land somewhere.
Zero-click search takes informational clicks away, but it does not take the decision away. The brands named in the answer still get chosen, and the engines name the brands that other websites vouch for.
What does zero-click search actually mean?
A zero-click search is one where the session ends on the results page. Some people get a fact and leave. Some read an AI Overview that summarizes five pages and open none. Some refine their query, tap a number from a local pack or watch a video in the results.
The term is often shorthand for “Google stole my traffic,” but the mechanics matter. A searcher who reads an AI Overview naming three brands and later searches for one by name has produced a zero-click search and a branded search. Only the first shows up as lost traffic.
For a marketing director, zero-click search is the growing share of demand resolved on a results page you do not own, where your brand either appears or does not.
How big is zero-click search in 2026?
Three studies give the clearest picture, and they measure different things.
SparkToro, working with clickstream data, found that 58.5 percent of US Google searches ended without a click in 2024. Its 2026 follow-up, using Similarweb data, found the figure had reached 68 percent in the first four months of 2026. Because the two studies use different data panels, the jump is partly a change of measurement. SparkToro names AI Overviews as a likely driver but does not isolate how much of the rise they explain.
Ahrefs measured the effect on the pages that rank. Comparing Search Console clickthrough data across 300,000 keywords, it found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 34.5 percent lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page in a study published in April 2025, and about 58 percent lower in December 2025 data. For keywords that now show an AI Overview, average desktop position-one clickthrough fell from 7.3 percent in December 2023 to 1.6 percent in December 2025.
Seer Interactive tracked 3,119 informational search terms across 42 client accounts. On queries with an AI Overview, organic clickthrough fell from 1.76 percent to 0.61 percent between June 2024 and September 2025.
Two caveats. The Ahrefs and Seer studies focus on informational queries, where AI answers are most common. And these are averages; a page quoted inside the answer behaves very differently from one that is not.
Why is zero-click search not the end of traffic?
Because the click was never the point. The point was to be the brand the searcher chose, and three things still make that happen when nobody clicks.
The first is a mention inside the answer. When an AI Overview, ChatGPT or Perplexity names your product, the searcher has met you without visiting you. Seer Interactive found brands cited in AI Overviews earned about 35 percent more organic clicks and 91 percent more paid clicks than brands that were not cited. Seer notes it cannot prove citation causes the lift, since strong brands are both more likely to be cited and more likely to be clicked. Either way, being in the answer and being chosen go together.
The second is branded search. A person who reads “the best options for mid-market payroll are X, Y and Z” often searches for X by name the next day, and that query converts far better than the one that started the journey. If branded search is flat while zero-click rises, you are not in the answers. If it is growing, you are.
The third is third-party pages carrying your brand. Profound’s 2026 analysis of 11.8 billion AI citation data points found that brand websites account for 57 percent of AI citations globally, leaving about 43 percent for media, communities and institutions. On ChatGPT, brand websites were 47 percent, so over half of its citations were third-party pages. Much of what the engines say about you is written by someone else, and a listicle that ranks your polymer compound third still sends the reader to you, click or no click.
How should you respond by type of query?
Zero-click search does not hit every query the same way, so the response should differ too. This is the triage we run on a client’s keyword list.
| Query type | What the results page does now | What still earns clicks | Your response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informational (“what is embedded finance”, “how to cut injection molding waste”) | AI Overview or snippet answers on the page. Top-result clicks down by a third to more than half (Ahrefs). | Being the quoted source; depth the summary cannot hold (data, tools, templates). | Put the direct answer in the first 100 words so you are the page quoted. Add original data below it. Measure mentions and citations, not just clicks. |
| Commercial (“best accounting software for law firms”, “polymer supplier comparison”) | AI answers list three to six brands, usually drawn from listicles, review sites and trade press. | Clicks still flow to the brands named, and to the listicles themselves. | Get placed in the listicles and comparisons the engines cite. Publish an honest comparison page of your own. Track which third-party pages are cited for your category. |
| Branded (“Acme pricing”, “Acme vs Beta”) | Knowledge panel, site links, review snippets, sometimes an AI summary of what others say about you. | Almost everything. The searcher wants your page. | Own every branded variant with a dedicated page (pricing, integrations, alternatives, reviews). Keep third-party reviews and Reddit threads about you accurate, since the AI summary draws on them. |
| Local and navigational (“payroll consultant near me”) | Map pack, calls and directions inside the results. | Phone taps, direction requests and clicks from the pack. | Keep the business profile complete, collect reviews, report calls and direction requests as conversions. |
The pattern is consistent. The further a query is from a purchase, the less a click matters and the more a mention matters. The closer it is, the more you should protect the click.
What should you do in the next 90 days?
This plan fits most teams, whether you sell software, financial services, consumer products or industrial equipment.
Days 1 to 30: measure what zero-click hides. List 50 to 100 prompts and queries that matter commercially. Run them through Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude weekly and record whether you are named, which sources are cited, and who else appears. Our free LLM visibility checker does the first pass. Add branded search impressions, direct traffic and assisted conversions to your monthly report. Our post on how to measure your brand’s AI visibility covers the full setup.
Days 31 to 60: make your own pages quotable. On every commercial and informational page, put a two-sentence direct answer under the H1, use question-style headings, add a FAQ with self-contained answers and mark it up with schema. This is the on-site half of AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization), explained in our guide to AEO and GEO. Build or refresh the branded pages from the table so no branded query lands on a thin result.
Days 61 to 90: earn presence on the pages the engines quote. Take the citation list from month one. For each commercial query, find the two or three listicles, trade articles or community threads cited most often and work to appear in them: pitch an editor, contribute data, answer the Reddit thread properly, or commission a guest article on a site with real traffic. This is the lever most teams skip. In engagements we track, brands we have placed in third-party articles, guest posts and listicles have seen AI citations rise by roughly 70 to 80 percent on the prompts where those articles are cited. The reasoning behind that is set out in our guide to why third-party articles decide which brands AI recommends.
By day 90 you should have a baseline, a quotable site and your first third-party placements. In our experience, AI citation movement usually shows within 30 to 60 days of a placement going live.
How Model Marketing helps
Zero-click search rewards brands named in the answer, and the engines name the brands the rest of the web vouches for. That is the work we do. Our AEO/GEO service starts with a two-week audit mapping where you are and are not cited across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, then fixes on-site structure and targets the third-party pages that matter for your category.
The off-site half runs through our link building, digital PR and Reddit programs. Every site we place on passes nine checks, including how often it is already cited by the AI engines, so a placement earns a ranking signal and a citation signal at once. Pricing is per live unit with no retainer; the full list is on our pricing page. Clients include Uniqode, SM Polymers Private Limited and Sim Films. We work across SaaS, fintech, professional services, consumer apps, B2B services and manufacturing, because zero-click search is not a software-only problem.
