An unlinked brand mention is any time a third-party page names your brand without linking to it. SEO long treated these as worth little next to a backlink. Entity SEO treats them as evidence. Google’s Knowledge Graph and the large language models behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude build their picture of a brand from every place it is named, linked or not, and pages that name your brand alongside your category are the evidence these systems weigh when they decide which brands to recommend.
In a May 2025 study of roughly 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found that branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with brand visibility in Google’s AI Overviews, against 0.218 for backlinks. Entity SEO is the practice of making your brand a clear, consistent, well-connected entity across the web so that search engines and AI assistants recognize it and attach it to the right topics.
Search engines and AI assistants recommend the brands that the rest of the web names consistently and in the right context, so every third-party mention, with or without a link, is now a ranking and citation signal.
What is an entity, and what does entity SEO mean?
An entity is a thing that can be identified and described: a company, a person, a product, a place. Google describes its Knowledge Graph as a database of billions of facts about people, places and things, drawn from public sources, licensed data and content owners themselves (Google Knowledge Panel Help). When Google is confident that a name on a page refers to a specific entity, it connects that page to everything else it knows about the entity.
Entity SEO is the work of helping that connection happen for your brand. It has two halves. On your own site: a consistent name, a clear description of what you do, Organization structured data (schema markup that tells Google your official name, logo, address and social profiles), and an About page that reads like an encyclopedia entry rather than a sales pitch. Off your site: the mentions, profiles and references that confirm your brand exists, what category it belongs to and who vouches for it. Unlinked mentions belong to the second half, which most brands neglect.
Why do unlinked brand mentions matter now?
Two things changed. Google got good enough at natural language to recognize a brand name in plain text, so it no longer needs a hyperlink to know an article is about you. And AI assistants arrived. When ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode writes an answer naming three vendors, the model is drawing on patterns in what it has read and retrieved, and which brands sit next to a topic is one of the strongest patterns.
The Ahrefs study is the clearest evidence so far. Among brands with a Domain Rating (DR, Ahrefs’ 0 to 100 score of a site’s backlink strength) above 40, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, branded anchor text at 0.527 and branded search volume at 0.392. Domain Rating scored 0.326, referring domains 0.295 and backlinks 0.218. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions earned up to ten times more AI Overview mentions than the next quartile, and 26 percent of brands had none at all (Ahrefs, 2025). Correlation is not cause, but the three strongest signals all sit off the brand’s own site.
Citation data points the same way. Profound’s analysis of 11.8 billion AI citation data points found brand websites account for 57 percent of citations globally, leaving about 43 percent for third-party pages; on ChatGPT the brand-website share is 47 percent, so over half of citations go to pages the brand does not own (Profound, 2026, via WARC). Links still matter for rankings. A brand that has links but is never discussed now has a visibility problem.
How do AI assistants learn what your brand is?
A large language model does not keep a list of trusted brands. During training it reads enormous amounts of text and learns which words tend to appear together. If “Acme” appears again and again near “payroll software for small manufacturers” in trade articles, comparison posts, Reddit threads and reviews, the model learns the association. If Acme appears only on acme.com, the association is weak. This is co-occurrence, the mechanism behind the industry shorthand that mentions are the new links.
Most assistants add a second step: live retrieval. Ask ChatGPT with search, Perplexity or Google AI Mode for a recommendation and the system runs searches, reads the top results and builds its answer from them. The pages it reads are the ones that already rank, and for “best X” questions those are often third-party listicles, reviews and guides rather than vendor homepages. We cover this in our post on how ChatGPT chooses which brands to recommend. Either way, your brand needs to be named, in context, on pages you do not control.
Which entity signals can you control?
Here are the signals, where each lives and how to strengthen it.
| Signal | Where it lives | How to strengthen it |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent brand name | Your site, every profile and every mention | Pick one spelling and casing, use it everywhere, and ask partners and journalists to use it too |
| Organization schema | JSON-LD code on your home or About page | Add name, legalName, url, logo, description, foundingDate, address and sameAs links to your official profiles |
| sameAs connections | Inside the Organization schema | Point to LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata, X, YouTube and any industry directory that lists you |
| Wikidata entry | wikidata.org | Create a factual item with references to independent coverage; do not write promotional text |
| Wikipedia article | wikipedia.org | Only if you meet notability rules, which require significant independent coverage; earn the coverage first |
| Business profiles and directories | Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, G2, Clutch, trade associations | Fill every field and match the name and description to your site |
| Third-party mentions | Press, guest posts, listicles, community threads, podcasts | Earn coverage that names the brand next to the category you want to be known for |
Google’s documentation says there are no required properties for Organization markup and recommends adding as many as are relevant, because some are used behind the scenes to disambiguate your organization from others (Google Search Central). If your brand shares a name with a town, a band or an older company, every extra identifier reduces the chance that engines mix you up.
How do third-party mentions build your entity?
On-site signals tell engines who you say you are. Third-party mentions tell them who everyone else says you are, and engines look to the second to confirm the first.
Press coverage and digital PR place your brand in publications engines already treat as authoritative. Guest posts on trade sites put your name in a bylined article about your subject, which teaches the association between brand, author and topic. “Best of” listicles are among the pages AI assistants quote most often for recommendation prompts, because they already rank for the “best X” queries the assistant searches; we explain why in our post on listicles and AI citations. Community threads on Reddit and niche forums supply the plain-language, first-person mentions that models read as unfiltered opinion.
The link is secondary. In our experience, a guest post that names your brand six times in context and links once is a stronger entity signal than a sidebar link with no surrounding text. This holds across industries: a polymer manufacturer named in a packaging trade journal, a fintech named in a Reddit thread about payroll and a law firm quoted in a local business paper all gain the same kind of evidence.
In engagements we track, brands we have placed in third-party articles, guest posts and listicles have seen AI citations rise by roughly 70 to 80 percent on the prompts where those articles are cited. That fits the Ahrefs correlations, and in our experience being named in the right places moves AI visibility faster than on-site changes alone.
How do you measure unlinked mentions?
Start with a count. Ahrefs, Semrush, Brand24 or Mention will show how many pages name your brand, how many link to you and how the total changes month to month. Track three numbers: total mentions, mentions on pages with real organic traffic, and mentions that pair your brand with a target category term. The third tends to track AI visibility most closely.
Then measure the output. Pick 20 to 30 prompts your buyers would type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, run them monthly, and record whether you are named and which pages are cited. Our guide to AEO and GEO (answer engine and generative engine optimization) includes a 90-day plan for this. Allow 30 to 60 days for assistants to reflect new mentions; that is the lag we typically see.
How Model Marketing helps
Most of this you can do yourself. The schema, profiles and Wikidata entry usually take about a week. The hard part is earning third-party mentions at a steady pace, in the right publications, with the right context.
That is what we do. Our digital PR service earns coverage in publications engines already cite, with a data-led campaign at $8,000 (floor of six unique DR 60+ linking domains, typically eight to twelve) or single earned placements at $1,500. Our link building places bylined guest posts and niche insertions on sites that pass nine vetting checks, the last being how often each is already cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode. Our Reddit marketing adds community mentions, billed only after seven days live.
Everything is billed per live unit, month to month, with no retainer. Full rates are on the pricing page. To see where you stand, run the free checker above and compare your results with the competitor you most want to beat.
